Supporting Special Educational NeedsIf you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will always be a failure
You never know what someone is capable of achieving until you give them the opportunity to show you.
Richard is proud to have been one of the founding team of the Enterprise Adviser network which gave him the opportunity to engage with Northgate School & Arts College and The Beehive. An experience which taught him the challenges facing young people with learning difficulties.
Just 6% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment,despite more than 65% wanting to and being able to be in work. Mencap 2017
Young people face enough challenges in life without more challenges being put in front of them when they want to join the world of work, and it is a sad state of affairs that so many people who are very capable of working are still unable to find it. Not all the challenges these people face come directly from employers though. Some come from themselves and their own aspirations and self belief, and this obstacle cannot be overcome with one single solution.
Richard works on projects that involve;
- Raising the aspirations of young people with special educational needs and disabilities.
- Encourage employer engagement between businesses and SEND schools with school visits and workplace experiences.
- Helping employers over come misconceptions of employing people with SEND to understand the business benefits.
